Tapiola Daycare

With the comprehensive refurbishment carried out between 2022 and 2025, the building has been transformed into a healthy and safe day nursery while carefully preserving its architectural character. The design approach was restorative, respecting the building’s original appearance and maintaining the restraint and clarity of its architecture. The project was developed in close collaboration with the City Museum and the Building Control Authority.

Designed by Viljo Revell and completed in 1953, the Tapiola Day-Care facility is a protected building of considerable national significance. Together with the terraced houses designed by Revell opposite, it defines the street space and forms a cohesive 1950s setting. Originally also intended for primary school use, the building is characterised by exposed red brick façades combined with painted blue cladding panels.

The refurbishment involved extensive renewal of the building fabric while retaining key original elements. Façades, windows, and floor and roof structures were largely replaced to meet contemporary requirements, while distinctive details and the original colour palette were preserved. Building services were fully renewed and carefully integrated to maintain the building’s external character and generous internal volumes. Accessibility was improved through new entrance arrangements, ramps, and clear wayfinding. The building is classified as fire class P3, with the basement forming a separate fire compartment.

The result is a carefully renewed building that balances contemporary performance with architectural continuity.
