Heltech Haaga Educational Unit

We completely renovated and extended the Heltech Haaga educational unit, a protected building designed by Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen in 1968. The renovation work began in 2009 and was completed in 2014 in close cooperation with the Helsinki City Museum, the city planning department and the building supervision authority. The building's systems and their routes were completely renewed. Integrating systems that meet current requirements into the original structures was a challenging and precision-demanding design task for the entire design team.

We designed the facades with particular care to honour the original architecture, using special profiles. For the exterior of the building we renewed the window systems and cladding as well as the waterproof layer of the roof. The interior spaces and yard areas were designed according to the needs of the automotive department’s education and administration. A major functional change to the building was a space built underground connecting the different departments.
