Puente Soivio

The villa Puente Soivio is located in Vammala on a forested slope in the vicinity of the fieldstone St Olaf’s Church in Tyrvää. Higher up on the slope a spring bubbles, forming a brook which flows freely through the plot even in the summer heat. The couple who own the land wanted to build on both sides of the brook, which led to the idea of applying the principles of bridge construction to the building and to the final touch of damming the brook passing under the structure.

The resulting pond is the centrepiece of the villa. On one side, the sauna terrace opens to the evening sun, and the opposite terrace allows breakfast to be taken in the morning sun. The walkway between them allows for diving into the pond after swimming and the two-metre-deep pond has also been stocked with salmon for fishing. Even the atmosphere indoors is more like living on the sea – the feeling in the morning is like waking up in a sailboat, with the rays of the sun reflecting from the surface of the water quivering beautifully on the cabin’s ceiling.
We built the villa with timber felled from the owner’s forest and sawn on site. The long bridge spans were executed with stringer boards and braced with steel tie rods. The curved roof structures were formed with gulam and covered with galvanized corrugated steel. The freshwater intake pipe runs under the metal roofing to let the sun naturally heat it, providing warm water for the villa in the summertime.
